How we do: Vehicle Optimisation.

At Chill-Chain one of our main goals is to take empty vehicles off the road. This is because we recognise that 30.4% of lorries on UK roads are empty at any given time, according to UK government stats. We know that through better vehicle optimisation and visibility throughout supply chains we can improve this.

We also know that the average fill rate of vehicles is around 60.4%. This means that on average for a standard UK truck, there are only 15.6 pallets being transported at any one time.

We think that there are huge opportunities to improve this fill rate and we have already identified opportunities within our customer's supply chains to do this. Increasing pallet fill rate drives supply chain efficiency, reduces the cost per pallet and is of course better for the environment.

As a recent example, our technology highlighted to us that one of our customers had posted 3 partial jobs from the same collection location, with delivery locations within a 20-mile radius of one another.

With pallet quantity and weight allowing, we were able to consolidate this into one load, which saved them 67% of the total cost, increased their pallet fill rate and took two unnecessary vehicles off the road!

We designed our market place to identify opportunities to improve vehicle utilisation amongst our customers by looking at our historic and live data. Data drives the majority of our decisions and the way we can use it differentiates us from how the logistics industry has worked historically.
